Minho
Green, rainy and full of festivals. In the Minho clay takes on the faces of devils, linen takes 21 embroidery stitches and the pantry keeps an apple that monks once saved.
Barcelos, land of clay and devils
António Ramalho is the great-grandson of Rosa Ramalho and the son of Júlia Ramalho. At 8 he sold his first clay horse; today he makes surreal figures with the green glaze that is his signature. In the same town, Porfírio Mendes takes corks collected from restaurants and makes roosters, devils, saints and witches with only a knife, sandpaper, glue and paint.
Guimarães and the 21 stitches
At A Oficina, in the centre of Guimarães, Sameiro Fernandes and Maria da Conceição Ribeiro embroider with 21 stitches and six fixed colours: red, blue, beige, grey, white and black. They are two of only eight artisans certified for Guimarães embroidery, with 19th century motifs.
The Minho pantry
The Casais family, from Tibães, searched for the last Porta da Loja apple trees and planted new orchards from them. The monks of Tibães Monastery had kept the variety alive; farmers stored it in the loja, the room behind the front door. In Ponte de Lima, Deolinda Campelo carries on the smokehouse her mother started in 1988, smoked over oak.

The viola braguesa and the cavaquinho are instruments of the Minho. Diogo Valente builds them by hand, in his workshop in Aveiro, with woods chosen one by one. In 2023 the Cavaquinho Museum made him an Honorary Member.
