Madeira
On Madeira, wool and thread tell the story of the island. The earflap cap kept warm those who worked in the hills, and the embroidery begun by the first settlers became one of the island’s largest industries.
The earflap cap
Irina Andrusko, a researcher and textile maker, and Luz Ornelas, from Funchal, who learned the caps from her mother and has made them for more than thirty years, founded the Enfia o Barrete collective in 2021. They study Madeiran wool and make caps, carded and spun wool and tools based on ethnographic research.
Madeira embroidery on the move
David Oliveira grew up in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos watching his mother and grandmother embroider. He studied architecture in Oslo and came back. He designs the embroidery for Bailha and works with embroiderers Sara de Sousa, Helena da Silva and Dorina Pita, using 19th century techniques, on shirts and t-shirts made to be worn.
