Did you know that if the clay is good, water stays nice and cool inside? We learned it from master potter Xico Tarefa, who has worked clay on the wheel in Redondo since the age of 13, while his wife Zeza brings it to life with flowers or typical Alentejo motifs.

Redondo pottery with sunflowers

Jarro Nove Clay Jug

A clay jug for cool water, with the sunflowers of Alentejo.

Story of the piece

Jarro Nove Clay Jug

To keep water cool or to serve wine

In the past there were simple ways to keep water cool. A clay jug was one of them: the porosity of the material let a small amount of water pass through the walls and evaporate on the surface, helping to keep the water inside cool.

At Olaria XT, this traditional function takes on its own expression. Xico Tarefa shapes the clay on the wheel, with the experience of someone who has known the material for decades. Then Zeza paints each piece by hand, adding sunflowers that evoke the fields, the light and the colours of Alentejo.

To bring water to the table, serve wine or simply add colour to a corner of the house, this jug brings together use and decoration in a piece that keeps the knowledge of Redondo pottery.

An everyday object, made of clay, time and hands that keep tradition alive.

Cool water, as in the old days. With hand‑painted sunflowers.
