Ring Flask Barril Câmara de Ar
The shape that went with Alentejo workers to the fields.
Ring Flask Barril Câmara de Ar
A tradition to keep field work cool
Its shape is no accident. The flat shape of the barril câmara de ar made it easier to carry water during work in the fields. With openings for a rope to pass through, it could be carried on the shoulder or hung from a cart.
Made of porous, unglazed clay, the vessel used the natural properties of the material to help keep the water cool. The evaporation of a small amount of water through the clay walls helped to cool the inside.
At Olaria XT, Xico Tarefa shapes the clay on the wheel, preserving the knowledge of a craft he began to learn at the age of 13. Zeza gives it another expression: painted flowers that contrast with the memory of an object designed for work and give it a new presence.
Between the usefulness of other times and the beauty of handcrafted painting, the barril câmara de ar keeps telling a story of ingenuity, adaptation and Alentejo know how.
