Oeste
Between Leiria and Lourinhã, close to the sea, lies one of the areas with the most workshops in the country. Caldas da Rainha has trained artists for decades, and many stay. Five makers, each with a different material.
Caldas, a town of workshops
Samuel Reis studied Industrial Design at ESAD and works glass alongside master glassblowers. In his Cerne project he uses hollow tree trunks as moulds, so the glass takes the shape of the wood. His work has been shown at Homo Faber in Venice. Alice Aranha, also in Caldas, crochets with wool, silk, linen and cotton she dyes herself with natural ingredients.
Bulrush
Helena Novelletto learned bulrush weaving from master Manuel Ferreira, of Santarém. The plant grows in ponds and on riverbanks, is harvested once a year in July and August and dried in the sun before it is plaited. Helena lives in Caldas and is one of the last bulrush weavers working in Portugal.
Wild clay
Andreia Pinho has had a workshop in Leiria since 2021. She does not buy clay: she digs it herself, all over the country. From Portuguese folklore, Iberian mythology and cult cinema come masks, devils and big-head figures.
Lourinhã brandy
The Lourinhã Cooperative Winery has brought farmers together since 1957. The soils and the climate, between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, give white grapes with little alcohol and high acidity, which makes a DOC grape brandy of great quality. It ages at least five years in old wood.
