The best Portuguese gifts are pieces that could only have been made in one specific place in Portugal, by a maker you can name, using a technique that is still alive. Black clay from Gondar, Barcelos clay figures and the Barcelos rooster, cobertor de papa wool blankets from Maçainhas, Guimarães embroidery, hammered copper from Loulé, banana fibre baskets from the Azores, mountain wool and mead: these are authentic Portuguese handmade gifts, and all of them can be sent abroad if you choose with the journey in mind.
Gifts from Portugal in short
- What to look for: a known place of origin, a named maker and a living technique, not a factory souvenir.
- Travel well: textiles (wool blankets, scarves, embroidered linen), copper, banana fibre baskets and cork.
- Need more care: black clay, clay figures and anything in a glass bottle.
- For homesick Portuguese abroad: the Barcelos rooster, mead, honey and a cobertor de papa planner.
- Shipping: Ra-Ro ships to Portugal, the rest of Europe, the USA, Canada and Brazil; shipping costs and taxes are calculated at checkout.
What makes a gift genuinely Portuguese?
"Made in Portugal" on a label is a start, not an answer. At Ra-Ro we look at three things. Where the piece was born: a village, a mountain range, an island. Who made it: every product page names the artisan or workshop. And how rare the craft is, which we measure with the Ra-Ro Index, a rarity scale that runs from Uncommon to Unique. Many of these crafts survive in the hands of very few people, as we explain in Rare crafts in Portugal: the last masters.
We already have a Christmas gift guide by price and six gift ideas with soul. This guide is different. It is organised by who you are buying for and by what arrives in good shape, whether you are sending a piece of Portugal to a friend overseas or wondering what to bring back from Portugal when your suitcase is already full.
Which Portuguese gift for which person?
For someone who misses Portugal
The Barcelos Rooster (€60.20) is the obvious symbol, but this one is carved in cork by Porfírio Mendes, not cast in a mould. The legend is medieval: a pilgrim sentenced to death in Barcelos swore he was innocent and said a roast rooster would crow to prove it. The rooster crowed and the man was freed. The full story is in The Barcelos rooster: legend, meaning and how to recognise it. For something bolder, the Barcelos Myths Pack (€95.40) brings two clay figures by António Ramalho, great grandson of Rosa Ramalho: the Parideira and a Medusa that blends Greek myth with the folk imagination of Barcelos.
For someone who lives somewhere cold
The Cobertor de Papa (Shepherd's Blanket) (€198.10) is made in only one place in the world, Maçainhas, near Guarda, on hand looms more than 300 years old. It is thick, heavy, pure wool: the blanket shepherds wrapped themselves in against the mountain cold. For a lighter wool gift, the Mottled Scarf (€59.00) by As Capuchinhas, in the Montemuro mountains, is dyed with lichens and finished with burel pompoms.
For someone who cooks and entertains
The Black Clay Jug (€36.20) is made by César Teixeira in Gondar, Amarante, and fired in a soenga, an open air fire whose smoke turns the clay black. Read more in Black clay from Gondar. From the far south, the Copper Plate (€124.20) by Nuno Palma of Loulé, who cuts the copper sheets himself, works on the table or hung on a wall.
For someone who wants a little Portugal at home
A banana plant fruits only once. On São Miguel, in the Azores, MUSAZ turns the leftover stem into fibre and the fibre into basketry: the Banana Fibre Pack (€84.15) pairs a round woven basket with a crochet coaster. The Guimarães Embroidery Pack (€53.27) holds two linen pouches embroidered by certified artisans, one for sugared almonds and one filled with lavender. See how it differs from the lovers' handkerchief in Guimarães embroidery and the lovers' handkerchief.
For someone who enjoys a drink by the fire
The Traditional Mead (€21.80) comes from the Serra da Estrela; we tell how it is made in Heather honey mead. If they prefer honey, bitter strawberry tree honey is a winter rarity from the Algarve, explained in Bitter strawberry tree honey.
Small and easy to post
The Cobertor de Papa Planner (€35.70) is covered in the same Maçainhas blanket. Light, useful and impossible to break.
What travels well, and what needs more care?
- Not fragile: blankets, scarves, wool, embroidered linen, copper, banana fibre baskets and cork. They do not break, which makes them the calmest choice for long distances.
- Fragile: black clay and clay figures. Clay is clay: a knock can chip it. Choose it knowing that.
- Bottles: mead travels in glass, and every country has its own rules on alcohol, so check those of the destination.
- Bulky but tough: a cobertor de papa is heavy, which matters for shipping cost, not for breakage.

The Barcelos rooster, black clay from Gondar, cobertor de papa wool blankets, Guimarães embroidery, hammered copper from Loulé, banana fibre baskets from the Azores, honey and mead.
What should I bring back from Portugal?
Something with a real place and a named maker behind it rather than a factory souvenir. If luggage is tight, choose textiles, copper or cork, which do not break, and have heavier pieces shipped.

Pieces that cannot break: wool blankets, scarves, embroidered linen, copper, banana fibre baskets and cork. Clay and glass bottles need more care.
How can I tell if a Portuguese handmade gift is authentic?
