Serra da Estrela
The highest point in mainland Portugal, at 1,993 metres, is also where the country learned to keep warm. Autumn reaches it first, and the wool that dresses us in winter comes from here.
The mountain that dresses the country
For centuries, shepherds climbed the mountain in summer and came down in winter with their flocks. From that wool came burel, the shepherd blankets and the Cobertor de Papa, still woven today in Maçainhas, Guarda, on looms more than 300 years old. In Manteigas, Ecolã has been making wool blankets since 1925.
After the fire
In August 2022, a fire burned more than 20,000 hectares of the mountain. Luca D’Ortenzi, of the Vago project, went to collect the wood that was left and turned it into bowls, vases and sculptures. The cracks and the black of the charcoal stay visible, on purpose.
What the mountain gives
Artur Aleixo, of Zimbro, makes liqueurs and mead from what he finds on the mountain: honey, elderflower, mountain plants. These are the bottles to open at the end of the day, when the temperature suddenly drops.
