Rooster Man
The Barcelos Rooster gains arms, a waistcoat and a drum.
Rooster Man
A colourful, humorous humanisation of Barcelos folklore
The Barcelos Rooster stands for faith, justice and luck. The legend is medieval: a pilgrim sentenced to death proclaimed his innocence and promised that a roasted rooster would crow as proof. The Rooster crowed. The pilgrim was saved.
Porfírio Mendes does not abandon that symbol. He transforms it. The exaggerated red comb, the open beak and the wattle are all there. But this rooster has arms, wears a waistcoat and plays the drum. He is ready for the Minho romaria. The Rooster Man makes some noise.
The rounded forms of the carved cork, the visible textures, expression rather than anatomical perfection: these are the craftsman's hallmarks. Bright primary colours are his choice: joy. No subtlety.
