She arrives with a vase in her hand, full of flowers. And we immediately ask: where does she come from? In coloured golden cork, the earrings anticipate the answer. They are hearts. From Viana. A symbol of love and devotion. From her costume we can tell she is a farm woman from the Minho. She who has proudly prepared herself for the festival, the pilgrimage, as tradition dictates.

Minho countrywoman

Flower Woman

The living memory of the women of Minho, in carved and painted cork.

Story of the piece

Flower Woman

The dress of those who work the land and devotedly wear the hearts of Viana

The Minho countrywoman walks through the fields. On her head, a headdress adorned with flowers shields her from the wind. The full skirt and embroidered apron tell stories of land, labour and tradition.

The white blouse breathes the effort of the day, and her shoes carry firm steps across the fertile soil of the Minho. But today is a feast day. And with pride, she puts on her great-grandmother's earrings, passed down from generation to generation.

Through his art, in carved and painted cork, Porfírio Mendes shows not the dress of this Flower Woman, but rather the living memory of the women of the Minho. Women who work the fields and who, on feast days, in every cut and embroidered stitch of their clothes and in their emblematic earrings, carry us, heart and soul, to their land. To their traditions.

Porfírio Mendes, a folk sculptor from Barcelos, crafts these pieces with a blend of cork, love and mischievous wit. Without formal artistic training, he discovered in cork the ideal material for his irreverent and humorous creations, which pay tribute to the region's rural culture.
