With exaggerated features, wide eyes, pointed teeth and a screaming mouth. That is how Porfírio Mendes's Witch looks. Dramatic and disturbing, made from cork worked with glue, knife and sandpaper. And coloured in black and red.

Imagery of the occult

Witch

A cork witch between mysticism and humour.

Story of the piece

Witch

The imagery of witches and the occult.

Portugal has a deep side where superstition lives next door to the sacred and to religion. It is belief, it is fear.

Porfírio Mendes knows how to portray both sides. He shapes religious figures and demonic beings with the same hand, the same cork, the same colours. The same freedom of someone who makes no apology for forms or proportions.

This Witch is one of those figures. Pronounced anatomy, a well-defined bust beneath the red dress, where mysticism merges with a certain earthy, human rawness. But the yellow broom settles it. It is the broom that suggests magic and mischief. And it turns an unsettling figure into a character with humour. With a destination, with intent, with a story to tell.

A piece that evokes the expressionist and somewhat "naïf" style of Porfírio Mendes, and his universe of the fantastic and social satire.

Porfírio Mendes, a folk sculptor from Barcelos, crafts these pieces with a blend of cork, love and mischievous wit. Without formal artistic training, he discovered in cork the ideal material for his irreverent and humorous creations, which pay tribute to the region's rural culture.
