Cantarinha dos Namorados

Romance is alive and well, complete with floral high-relief detailing.

This is a love story.
Perhaps not one, but many.

It begins at least five centuries ago, in Guimarães (Minho, Portugal), but we are especially grateful to 2022: that was when the historic city and a handful of certified artisans committed themselves to keeping the Cantarinha dos Namorados (Lovers' Jug) alive for future romantics or mere collectors. More than good will, protocols were signed to ensure that each cantarinha is produced according to a rigorous set of traditional standards and techniques.

We opened the lid and peeked inside.

The Cantarinha dos Namorados was the receptacle where local brides kept all the money they could save up, in order to buy a gold necklace for their wedding day. Other memories from that time tell us it was also where they kept the gifts they received from the groom's parents.

Made of red clay, shaped like a traditional water vase, it is decorated with floral details in high relief and sparkling mica powder. Absolutely unique, yes, even more so when we discover that only two of those certified artisans continue to produce it to this day.
