Barcelos Rooster
The Barcelos Rooster, true to tradition, in cork instead of clay.
Barcelos Rooster
True to the tradition and the symbol of Barcelos
The legend is medieval. A pilgrim in Barcelos was sentenced to death. He proclaimed his innocence and promised that a roasted rooster would crow as proof. The rooster crowed. The man was acquitted.
The Barcelos Rooster became a byword for faith, justice and luck. It is one of the most reproduced symbols of Portuguese identity in the world.
Porfírio Mendes chooses cork where others choose clay. That is the difference. The traditional polychrome is there: a red comb, a body painted with hearts, yellow and turquoise blue. But cork brings something else: lightness, texture, the visible mark of the knife and the sandpaper.
A signature craft piece, a tribute to his homeland, Barcelos.
The piece in facts.
In 2013 Porfírio discovered cork as his raw material.
