A bag that carries tradition to a modern lifestyle.
There was a time when farmers were the authors of some of their own tools. In Tavira (Algarve, Portugal), it wasn’t that long ago. Maybe they didn’t have to make the shovel or the scythe, sure, but what good are those if you don’t have the baskets to carry the bountiful harvest with you? That’s what we learned: fifty years ago it was still common for local farmers to build their own palm baskets so they could collect potatoes and carobs.
Thanks to AECT (Associação em Contacto Tavira) — an association that promotes active ageing and fights isolation and exclusion among the elder population — we found three gorgeous products that descend from that tradition.
This bag is currently crafted by 70-to-80 year old women, weaving nothing but a plant called palm, which grows in the same wastelands of their youths.
And you know what we couldn’t believe? In addition to making these, some of these artisans still work on the fields every day. In their faces, their hands and their stories we found a tapestry of time and strength.
