Algarve
Away from the beaches, the Algarve is hills, strawberry trees and workshops. Esparto grass is pulled by hand on the slopes, copper is still hammered in Loulé and palm leaves pass from hand to hand in Tavira.
Esparto from the hills
Isidoro Ramos, from Paderne, learned esparto weaving as a child from his grandmother and mother. He worked for a telephone company and, when he retired, went back to the land. Esparto is not cut: it is pulled, between July and September. Isidoro is one of the few artisans who still harvest it in the inland Algarve hills.
Loulé copper
Nuno Palma works at the Coppersmiths’ Workshop, part of Loulé Criativo, which gives new life to crafts with roots in the 13th century. He learned from masters such as Analide Carmo and hammers copper and brass into cataplanas, plates and commissioned pieces.
Tavira palm
At AECT, in Tavira, senior artisans meet every week to weave palm as it used to be done. Each rug and each basket is also a way of breaking the isolation of the people who make them.
Strawberry tree brandy and honey
Jorge and Esmeralda Lima look after 100 hectares of wild strawberry trees in São Marcos da Serra, overlooking the Odelouca river. Jorge is the fourth generation of distillers in his family and ages the brandy in old oak casks.
