The mountains are ancient, the winters long. We feel it in the crisp, frosty air we breathe. At an altitude of 2,000 metres, the village of Manteigas (Beira-Alta, Portugal) is nestled in the Serra da Estrela, populated by shepherds and textile craftsmen since the 12th century.

FAMILY TRADITION IN WOOL

João Clara de Assunção returned to Manteigas in 1995 to revitalize Ecolã, a family business founded in 1925. An economist by training, he became a shepherd and artisan, saving the company from extinction with the support of master craftspeople.
Return and Family Heritage

In 1995, João Clara de Assunção returned home to Manteigas from Lisbon to revive a family business called Ecolã, dating back to 1925. As an economist, he became the fourth generation to inherit and manage the humble workshop. He calls it the best decision he has ever made.

Rescue and Collaboration

João rescued Ecolã from extinction and began the journey that would transform it into a successful, certified artisanal wool-processing company. The oldest family based in Portugal.

Product and Technique

It’s all about bordaleira Serra da Estrela wool, a dense and water-resistant wool cloth rooted in medieval tradition and vertically-integrated in an efficient, chemical-free production process. Once worn by shepherds and clerics, it is now reborn as blankets, coats, bags, among others, and praised worldwide.

Continuity and Collaborations

Today, João also counts on the help of his daughters as business partners and artisans.

ABOUT WOOL

The wool used in Manta Pastor comes from Bordaleira sheep from Serra da Estrela, which provide high-quality raw wool. These sheep, born and raised at high altitudes, produce dense, warm wool that is ideal for burel.
