A medronho in the making for five generations.
Harvesting the tiny, very fragile arbutus fruit that makes Medronho requires and extra dose of care and patience. Maybe that’s why there’s increasingly fewer people willing to do that job.
Thankfully for Medronho lovers - count us in! São Marcos da Serra (Algarve, Portugal) has been harvesting the best arbutus artisans for more than a hundred years to this day. We’re talking about Jorge Lima and his family, who have been producing this drink for five generations, since his great-great-grandparents built a little warehouse in their backyard.
Five generations: what an exquisite alembic for DNA they must have.
Besides harvesting by hand, Jorge keeps working with traditional production methods, preserving history and crafting a distinguished product. We know that time teaches secrets that can’t be learned otherwise.
The result is sweet, elegant, intense. And in the meanwhile, maybe we could all use an extra dose care and patience in our lives.
